Multi-venue Pathway Workshops | March 30th 2011

Can we improve our businesses by learning from others – especially when they are world respected sector leaders? On the morning of March 30th, Operations Director Jason Tucker of Skanska, provides opportunity to discover how profitability, the winning of new business, the relationship with investors, suppliers and staff have been impacted by the company’s operational commitment to sustainable development values.

Globally, Skanska employs some 52,000 people and has a £11 billion turnover. In the UK, it employs circa 4,600 people and has an annual order book around £1.3 billion.

In addition, live from Geneva, the World Business Council reports on its Vision 2050 project. This work, led by Alcoa, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Storebrand and Syngenta, has brought 29 major corporates together to rethink the roles that business must play over the next few decades to enable society to move toward being sustainable by 2050. By then some nine billion people will need to live well, within the resources of the planet.

As the only affiliated branch in the UK of the World Business Council, part of our role is to monitor the global activities of the WBCSD and interpret them into a practical, UK perspective on behalf of our UK company members.

PETER PAUL, PRESENTATION & Q&A | March 30th 2011

Localised Manufacturing | Closed debate | March 31st 2011

Hosted by Tata Steel Europe at their London offices, BCSD-UK members will consider if rising energy costs, growing concerns on fuel security, changing global demographics, carbon footprint concerns, and other issues should stimulate a move to bring manufacturing back close to markets. Whilst this might be sensible in responding to these challenges, it might also act as a stimulant to the UK’s engineering and manufacturing communities at a time when the UK Government seems to be calling for a renaissance in that sector.

This closed debate will consider the strength of opinion in the BCSD-UK membership and what further actions we may take.
